KOTESOL's Annual Business Meeting (ABM) will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, starting at 7 p.m., in accordance with the KOTESOL Constitution & Bylaws. (Find information about attending the 2025 ABM here.)
During the ABM, any proposed amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws will be voted upon by all members in attendance. Please submit any proposed amendments (along with five endorsements from other current members) to the KOTESOL president by September 30. Looking Back, Looking Ahead – Late Spring & Summer with Jeonju-North Jeolla KOTESOL
As spring turned to summer, our chapter continued to explore creative ways to support and inspire language educators.

March JNJ Workshop Recap: Teaching English through Music and Culture
March 8th was our first workshop of the year. Natalie Thibault kicked things off with suggestions on how to use pop music beyond filling in the gaps. She brought some music to help us, with the Beatles’ “Penny Lane” and Taylor Swift’s video “You Belong with Me”. Some of the suggestions were vocabulary building, listening comprehension, pronunciation, multiple learning styles, cultural understanding, critical thinking and more, plus my favorite, singing along.

Research Committee Grant InformationThe 2025 KOTESOL Research Committee invites all members to submit proposals for a research grant. The committee will award up to two research grants, one for 250,000 KRW and another for up to 750,000 KRW, depending on the merits.
The smaller grant is suitable for action research or smaller projects, whereas the larger grant is only available for original research projects. Wesley Martin presented on how to make climate change real to middle school students. He based his lesson on using a little humor and a lot of metaphors. We brainstormed ways to find substitutes for climate change. One way is to see climate change as a moving bus that is going off a cliff. How can we save ourselves? After a number of suggestions, we looked at the benefits of using metaphors and humor to teach about crisis related themes. One way was to scaffold new vocabulary and to shelter from negative emotions. When the wolf is at the door it is better to laugh aloud than to despair....
