KOTESOL Research Grant 

  1. Progress Report 1: 500-550 words (Deadline: 25 June 2023).
  2. Progress Report 2:  1,000-1,500 words (Deadline: 25 September 2023).
  3. Draft research paper of 5,000-8,000 words for submission to the KOTESOL Journal (Deadline: March 31 2024)
  4. Present findings at the next KOTESOL International Conference following the end of the grant period. 

KOTESOL Grant for Action Research 

  1. Progress Report 1: 500-550 words (Deadline: 25 June 2023).
  2. Progress Report 2: 1,000 words (Deadline: 25 September 2023).
  3. Draft research paper of 5,000-8,000 words for submission to the KOTESOL Journal (Deadline: March 31 2024).

For some research, it may be appropriate to present findings in an article in The English Connection. The Research Committee is happy to discuss with recipients of the Research Grant for Other Projects how they will report findings. 


Eligibility

Applicants for the KOTESOL Research Grants must:

Be a member of KOTESOL at the time of application and maintain a valid membership through the duration of the research project.

Fulfil the research writing and presentation requirements (detailed below).

Ethics 

As part of the application for the KOTESOL Research Grants, researchers will need to complete an ethics statement and adhere to the guidelines. The ethics statement is included below in the grant application. 

Progress Reports 

Grant recipients are required to write two progress reports during the period of the grant. Progress reports should describe the recipients’ progress toward publication in the Korea TESOL Journal. In general, the first progress report will describe the methodology and methods that will be used in the research, progress towards recruitment of participants (as applicable), and progress towards data collection. 

Feedback

Grant recipients will receive feedback on their progress reports that they can choose to incorporate into subsequent reports, presentations, and/or the craft paper submitted for publication. A template for the progress reports for each grant is included below in the grant application pack. 

Publication Requirements

In order to receive the KOTESOL Research Grant, Progress Report 2 must demonstrate the grant recipients’ progress and commitment to publishing a full paper in the Korea TESOL Journal (or other such suitable publication in the case of the “Other Projects” Grant.


Once the manuscript drafts have been received by the Research Committee chair, and reviewed and approved by the Research Committee, the KOTESOL Research Grant recipient will receive a wire transfer of KRW500,000 (KRW250,000 for Action Research & Other Grants) to their Korean bank account.

Applications received after 11.59PM 31 March 2023 will not be considered. The decision of the Research Committee is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Successful applicants will be announced at the 2023 International Conference and their names published on the KOTESOL website. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications should be completed in English and submitted as PDF. Word limits are suggestions but should not be exceeded by more than approx. 10%. Questions can be directed to the Research Committee at research@koreatesol.org


What does the Research Committee do?

The Korea TESOL Research Committee is responsible for Organising (and advertising) the KOTESOL research grants. These grants are av​ailable to members undertaking research that focuses on English language teaching, English language learning and TESOL teacher education relevant to the Korean context (but not necessarily wholly focused on Korea). 

  • Soliciting and reviewing application grants and distributing funds to recipients.
  • Supporting all KOTESOL members, committees, and special interest groups (SIGs) to undertake research through providing help, advice, and offering workshops focused on research.
  • Ensuring the integrity, standards, and ethics of research KOTESOL publishes in the KoreaTESOL Journal 
  • Contributing to the integrity, standards, and ethics of research in Korea more generally, and internationally. 
     

The Research Committee Chairperson has some additional responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the National Council on the work of the Committee on a regular basis
  • Recruiting committee members 
  • Organising reviewers for the KOTESOL Research Grants
  • Sitting on the KOTESOL Board on Research & Publication Ethics (BORPE) 
  • Assisting the Editor-in-Chief of the KoreaTESOL Journal on an ad hoc basis.
  • Assisting the Publications Committee Chairperson on an ad hoc basis.
  • Representing KOTESOL in matters related to research. 
     

Research Committee Goals 2023

  1. Increase the number and amount of grants KOTESOL distributes to researchers through budgetary allocations and seeking contributions form relevant 3rd parties. 
  2. Work with Chapters and SIGs to promote research, especially action research among practitioners.
  3. Deliver a series of research-focused workshops. 
  4. Implement DOI system on the KOTESOL website 
  5. Apply to SCOPUS to have the KOTESOL Journal indexed
