As POC teachers living and working in South Korea, we are constantly exposed to a vast range of social justice issues, the ramifications of which largely creating a sense of otherness that permeates interpersonal interactions and the manner in which we are treated and assimilated as academic and economically active members of the larger Korean society. What our special interest group endeavors to achieve is the creation and facilitation of a space where such sentiments can be safely voiced so that issues pertaining to racial, cultural, ethnic and other forms of discrimination can be brought to the fore, largely for the purposes of awareness but with the overall vision of channeling such awareness into deliverable action that will yield change for a better society for all parties concerned.
As a person of color, this is an opportune means whereby your opinion can be voiced to achieve solidarity amongst a community of people who can echo your sentiments to a greater or lesser degree as well as add further impetus to your plight by sharing their own viewpoints and experiences. As a newly-incorporated member of KOTESOL, we have a great scope of influence to make the envisioned change; all that's left to do is bring the issues out in the open and find ways to address them in an equitable, humane and courageous manner. We invite you to be part of the legacy!
