Research Committee Grant Information

The 2024 KOTESOL Research Committee invites all members to submit proposals for a research grant. The committee will award up to two research grants, one for 250,000 KRW (200 USD) and another for 750,000 KRW (600 USD).

In the application materials, please specify which grant you are applying for.

Eligibility

.
Grant recipients must
1. Have a valid KOTESOL membership that will continue to be valid for the duration of the research project, including the publication/presentation process.
2. Have a Korean bank account or be able to accept USD transfers via PayPal.
3. Be willing to fulfill the research project writing requirements (see below).
4. Be willing to submit their research findings in a paper to the Korea TESOL Journal and wait for approval/rejection before submitting to another publication.

Writing Requirements

1. Short Report 500-550 words (Deadline: June 25)
2. Long report 1,000-1,500 words (Deadline: September 25)*
3. Draft of research paper 5,000-8,000 words (Deadline: February 25, the following year)

Grant recipients are required to write two progress reports. The progress reports should explain the grant recipient’s actions in working towards publication in the Korea TESOL Journal. In general, the reports should detail the following:

ㅡ What the grant recipient has already done.
ㅡ What the grant recipient is currently doing.
ㅡ What the grant recipient has left to do.
ㅡ What assistance the Research Committee might be able to offer the grant recipient.
ㅡ How the research grant is helping to achieve the recipient's goals. In other words, how the grant recipient has spent (or plans to spend) the grant funds (e.g., conferences, travel, books, transcription, translation, etc.).

* Grant recipients who present at the KOTESOL International Conference will NOT be required to submit the Long Report. Please note that grant recipients who submit abstracts for the International Conference must pass regular vetting procedures. 

Publication Requirements

In order to receive the grant, the long report must demonstrate the grant recipient’s progress and commitment to publishing a full paper in the Korea TESOL Journal.

Timeline

.
Proposals for the KOTESOL Research Grant are accepted throughout the year. However, the deadline for the year's grants is March 31. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their proposals by completing the form below (see How to Apply). The timeline of key dates is as follows:

1. March 31: Application Deadline. Proposals received after March 31 will be considered in the following year’s applicant pool.
2. Mid-April: The applicants are notified of the results of the proposal review.
3. June 25: Short Report (500-550 words) due. To be submitted by email.
4. September 25: Long Report (1,000-1,500 words) due. To be submitted by email.
5. February 25 (the following year): Draft of research paper (5,000-8,000 words) due. To be submitted by email.

Once the manuscript draft has been received by the Research Committee chair, and reviewed and approved by the Research Committee, the grant recipient will receive a wire transfer of 250,000 or 750,000 won to their Korean bank account (or 200 or 600 USD to their PayPal account).
