Making Connections at the September JNJ KOTESOL Meeting

September 21st saw our first meeting since the summer break. A popup market was held in
conjunction with our meeting, opening early to welcome shoppers and attendees. We had
silk bags and clothes and sweets, jewelry, Turkish-Arabic food, Hanji ornaments and
accessories, crocheted art and calligraphy. After a short time for shopping we had our first
presenter. KC Washington showed how to use active listening to make connections between
students, which increases interest and helps develop conversation. A good conversation is

Providing differentiated activities, Ingrid then led us all on a card-making activity...

Stories & Virtual Exchanges (Jeonju - North Jeolla October Workshop)

Building in many ways on September’s Workshop, the Jeonju - North Jeolla October Workshop discussed virtual exchanges and storytelling, and the importance of each of these in light of the pandemic and changes in learning.

Beginning with a short note about the history of storytelling and its imbrication with humanity, Dr Thorkelson then elaborated on a variety of activities that centered storytelling....

Inquiries in AI & Globalization - JNJ KOTESOL, September workshop.

Each month our workshop brings educators from around Korea to share their passion and expertise with us on the most pressing issues. In September Dennis Laffey and Silayan Casiño came to talk about AI and globalization.

Dennis Laffey’s presentation, titled “There Is No Fate but What We Make: Language Education in the Age of Generative AI,” was an opening inquiry into a new and crucial topic. Beginning from the premise that generative AI is “very much artificial, but not yet really intelligent,” he provided some key background on what generative AI is. Broadly put, generative AI is a...
