Using Critical Incidents to Further Professional Development (Chris Miller)

Reflective practice is an entrenched part of TESOL. Farrell defines critical incidents as “any unplanned and unanticipated event that occurs during class, outside class, or during a teacher’s career but is ‘vividly remembered’” (Farrell 2014; Brooksfield, 1990). In this presentation, the presenter will briefly explain the concept and process for analyzing a critical incident both in an individual and group setting using frameworks derived from Richards and Farrell (2005) and Brooksfield (1995).  Multiple examples, both from the presenter’s experience and otherwise, will be provided as well as the presenter’s interpretation of the incident.  Afterwards, using frameworks from both Brooksfield, as well as Richards and Farrell, participants will be invited to reflect on their own critical incidents in a small group setting and consider possible insights which may emerge.

Introducing the Reflective Practice Special Interest Group (Josette LeBlanc)

Recall a moment that happened in class. How would you describe it? What does this moment reveal about teaching and learning? How does reflecting on this moment inform what you will do next time? These are questions teachers within the Reflective Practice Special Interest Group (RPsig) ask themselves and each other. The RPsig is a community where teachers come together to look back on their teaching, to share experiences in the classroom, and to examine how reflection is a skill for professional and personal development. Participants who attend this session will get a firsthand experience of an RPsig meeting, and will get a better understanding of why this group is thriving in teaching communities all across Korea.

Swap Shop 2.0

The Swap Shop is back and we plan to make it a regular part of our events! Please bring a game, classroom activity, worksheet or other teaching idea that has worked well for you in the classroom and be prepared to share your ideas with the group (5-10 minutes per presenter). If possible, please bring some copies of your printable materials to share with the group.
