This April the Seoul KOTESOL Chapter is in for a special treat! We have two legends in KOTESOL coming from Gwangju to present at our chapter. Don't miss this chance to meet two leaders in our organization who have served in an expansive array of roles in the top echelons of our organization, and will bring charm and polish to this event. We welcome Dr. Lindsay Herron, KOTESOL national president, and Dr. David Shaffer, KOTESOL past president, and --- both of them have too many hats to mention, so best come and ask them when you meet them!
The event is FREE and open to all!

Practical Classroom Activities Promoting Intercultural Awareness
Abstract
This workshop explores intercultural awareness through the lens of critical cosmopolitan
literacies, a framework oriented around an ethics of care and critical thinking that can
productively be applied to classroom activities in order to understand and maximize their
transformative potential. The session will first offer a definition and key tenets of critical
cosmopolitan literacies, and then it will consider a selection of easy-to-implement
activities—some already familiar to participants—that can help bring the principles of
cosmopolitanism to language classrooms. Participants will try a few activities, themselves, and
discuss their reactions to them, before reflecting on their own classrooms and the ways in which
they can similarly cultivate more intercultural attitudes, global mindsets, and cosmopolitan
orientations through their personal pedagogical choices. Ultimately, the workshop aims to offer
participants not only new activity ideas but also a fresh perspective on familiar practices that can
productively be adjusted to cultivate various aspects of global citizenship.
Biographical Profile
Dr. Lindsay N. Herron has been a visiting professor at Gwangju National University of
Education in Korea since 2008, and she is the current president of KOTESOL. Her research
focuses on the multimodal interactions and critical cosmopolitan literacies of language learners
participating in an online cross-cultural exchange.
Trekking Through Korea’s Past Half Century: Historic Snapshots
Abstract
There has been dramatic change in the Republic of Korea over the last 50 years: from Park Chung-hee’s dictatorial Third Republic to Korea becoming an OECD donor and one of the most wired nations in the world. This presentation will journey chronologically through the major events gripping the republic over the span of the presenter’s residency in the nation – the assassination of President Park, the sinking of the Sewol ferry, and the Gwangju 5.18 Uprising, to name but a few. This presentation will hopefully provide the attendee with a more structured, year-by-year timeline of events and a more detailed understanding of historical milestones transpiring in Korea from the experiences of the presenter.
