The June 2016 Daegu-Gyeongbuk KOTESOL workshop will be broken up into two parts, first a workshop on visual literacy for students, and then a swap shop where all members are welcome to present and share their favorite activities.
We will continue to gather at ELMO Study Cafe in Downtown Daegu. The first few minutes are usually spent casually chatting before the workshop begins, so don't worry about coming in a few minutes late. Members and non-members are welcome alike and there is no charge for attending the meeting, but we ask that, if possible, you order a coffee to help support the venue. Also, please refrain from bringing outside beverages into the cafe.
Part 1: PowerPoint Power-Up: Equipping Students with Visual Literacy
Brian Grover
Tired of watching mostly banal, visually uninspired, student presentations rife with unoriginal, plagiarized content, I realized students have never been exposed to even the most basic tenets of solid visual communication. The problem was, presentations were not imparting learning. Rather, students were going through mechanical motions to fulfill some kind of course requirement. This applied to all of their courses. For that reason I moved presentation-making front and center. Through the nexus of a content course, British & American Culture, I came up with a formula for passing on some simple elements of superior presentation-making that can be adapted and applied through just about any content-based course. Students come away with effective presentation-making skills which can be immediately applied to all of their courses and beyond, in the case of my students, to their professional lives as they go on to become classroom teachers in their own right, making presentations daily. In our increasingly visual world, visual literacy is as essential as basic literacy was a century ago. The need to competently create and give presentations applies to business, government, science, politics: just about every endeavor students may eventually find themselves in.
About the Presenter: Brian Grover has been a classroom teacher for more than 25 years, mostly teaching young, college-aged adults in Japan, France, Canada and now South Korea. Prior to that – back in the real cut & paste days – Grover was in the visual communications field, a second love that he has returned to time and again over the ensuing decades.
Part 2: Swap Shop 2.0
Please bring a game, classroom activity, worksheet or other teaching idea that has worked well for you in the classroom and be prepared to share your ideas with the group (5-10 minutes per presenter). If possible, please bring some copies of your printable materials to share with the group.
