Classroom management doesn’t have a neat and tidy definition. In more traditional contexts, classroom management is narrowly envisioned as dealing with behavioral issues—that carrot-and-stick approach to maintaining order and discipline in the classroom. Thinking more broadly, classroom management involves a great deal of awareness on the part of the teacher: awareness of physical space and the all-important and elusive emotional dimension of teaching-learning.
In this online workshop, the first for the Classroom Management SIG, we will explore issues related to classroom management. Participants are encouraged to share ideas and beliefs on how to create a positive, supportive classroom climate. However, the main portion of the workshop is earmarked for uncovering the multiple perspectives of classroom dynamics, particularly that of our learners. Common classroom management issues will be presented, and we will brainstorm possible causes and effects. We will close with teacher-student roleplays.
