A great opportunity takes place this month as we partner with the Yongin Immigrant Support Center (YISC). The event will include keynote presentation by Yongin chapter member Dr. Maria Teresa Martinez-Garcia. Her focus will be on bilingualism, see the abstract below. The rest of our time will be spent learning more about each other and the center's services. Simply put: teachers helping teachers while also learning more about the community where we live and work.

Never too late: Demystifying the Role of Bilingualism
Learning a foreign language is not without its "costs" associated with the time, effort and
money that is required to achieve the desired proficiency (a.k.a, native-likeness) in the
other language. However, there is also growing recognition that foreign language
acquisition has plenty of benefits (from an individual and social point of view). This
presentation will focus on all the benefits associated with bilingualism (or the ability to
speak a second language) for the individual (economic, social, cognitive, and health-
related). It will emphasize specifically how the effort of learning a foreign language (at
any point in life) could have a long-lasting impact on our own future (e.g., delaying the
onset of Alzheimer). Thus, this presentation aims to show how the benefits of foreign
language education outperform any of its potential costs.
Biography
María Teresa Martínez-García (Maite) is an assistant professor in the Languages and
Literature Department at the University of Utah, Asia Campus. She is originally from
Alicante, Spain. She holds an undergraduate in English translation and interpreting from
the University of Alicante, an MA in Linguistics from the University of North Texas, and a
second MA in Linguistics, and a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Kansas (in the
USA). Her research interests lie in two main areas: Second language (L2) speech
perception and bilingualism, and her work has been presented in international
conferences and published in top-rated journals.
