Abstract
What does an ‘80s Norwegian synth-pop band have to do with our industrial climate crisis here in South Korea? Why are A-ha and BlackPink probably more effective and efficient at creating hope and meaningful change than the UN’s climate conference COP27 next week? In this presentation you’ll learn about work by teacher/student groups in SK and around our world that have created personal and structural change within our global village. In the workshop session we’ll further discuss techniques and topics, and our power, responsibility, and the importance of our role as ESL teachers in creating hope and meaningful change, including why these are equally as important as our understanding of the basic science behind the greatest challenge to all life on Eaarth, industrialized and natural. We’ll also discuss greenwashing and false balance in both media and our classrooms, and address any questions or topics you’d like to raise in the question times at the start and the workshop section within the second half of this shared session.
Julian Warmington (MA Engl. Lit., Dip. Teaching) taught in his hometown of Poneke, Aotearoa (“Wellington, New Zealand”) before heading to South Korea en route to the UK. He hasn’t arrived in the UK yet, teaching instead at the university level in Korea for 20 years. In 2012 and 13 he worked at a postgraduate institute of science and technology, there meeting students working on potential tech fixes to the climate crisis, and in 2014 watched Cowspiracy: The sustainability secret. In response, he established the Busan Climate Film Festival, and started presenting on the climate crisis at KOTESOL sessions in 2017. Now he is working on a collaborative, crowd sourced curriculum for ESL teachers in SK to introduce environmental awareness into their classrooms on a regular daily basis.
