Session Summaries

The Pleasures and Pitfalls of Postgrad Research Projects
Kimberley Roberts & Kirsten Razzaq

Are you considering pursuing postgraduate qualifications in TESOL or a similar field at some point in the future? Are you in the middle of postgrad work? Have you recently completed a research project, and find yourself wondering ‘what next’? This panel discussion will unpack the great pleasures and treacherous pitfalls of postgraduate-level research, and will offer advice, insights, and strategies to anybody planning, recovering from, or simply pondering the possibility of a research project.

Panelists Kimberley Roberts and Kirsten Razzaq each recently completed master’s degree research projects. Following a brief overview of her research question and results, Kimberley will discuss some of the issues she faced planning and executing classroom-based research. Kirsten’s research investigated Korean university students’ use of mobile technology to assist language learning. Kirsten will discuss some of her experiences and advice for anybody considering postgraduate studies, especially through online study.

The session will conclude with time for discussion and questions - a chance to find out exactly what the panelists wish they had known before setting out, to share advice about what to do with a research project once it is completed, and to ask that burning question whose answer might be just the help you need on your own postgrad journey.

Kimberley Roberts is a middle school teacher at an all girls’ public school in Daegu, South Korea. She is in her sixth year of teaching, having spent two years at the Daegu Global Centre and now in her fourth year of middle school. She recently graduated with an MA in TESOL, and also studied the CELTA before coming to Korea. Outside of work, her hobbies and interests include video games, anime, board games, and all things nerdy.

Kirsten Razzaq currently teaches English to young learners in Busan, South Korea, where she has lived since 2017. She recently completed an MA TESOL from the University of Sunderland, and her thesis focused on mobile-assisted language learning outside of the classroom. Since 2019 Kirsten has lectured online and offline for the NIIED, training incoming EPIK teachers and TaLK scholars. She is the KOTESOL Busan-Gyeongnam chapter Secretary for 2021, and hopes to connect members with opportunities for personal and professional development.
