“Student Centered Activities That Add a Little Fun to Reading Class”
Although reading is the most dominant skill dealt with in Korean public schools, it could be difficult to make a reading class fun enough for students. Yeji Jun will talk about several student-centered reading activities that she has tried in her class. Each of them is for different levels of students and for different purposes. Reading novels with advanced level students, applying EBS textbooks for flipped learning, and using typography (picture-word) to help beginner level students will be introduced along with some sample worksheets and real works done by her students.
“Talking About Talking”
How do you raise a problematic subject with your students?
When are they old enough to discuss injustice?
What do you need to talk about if you are concerned with social justice?
As a member of the Social Justice SIG, I wrestle with these concerns. Many parents and teachers shy away from serious discussions with students, especially discussions about gender, about the future of the world, and about their future in the world.
In this workshop participants will be challenged to explore some sensitive issues, and consider how we can have positive experiences with our students when discussing these, and how to avoid offending anyone during such discussions.
