Title: Engaging with Narratives of English Language Teaching
How Teaching Impacts Our Lives and We Impact Students
Time: 120 Minutes
Abstract: Language teacher identity research has become a major area of study but often has little impact on the classrooms and careers of teachers. This interactive workshop draws upon one study of foreign English teachers, and the larger body of teacher identity research, to consider how stories of being a teacher can shape choices, understandings, experiences, and careers of teachers. By reading and discussing the narratives of other teachers, while engaging with findings of language teacher identity research, participants can expect to walk away with thoughts and questions about how our own narratives impact our lives in and out of teaching.
Presenters Bios
Michael Chesnut is a teacher and researcher interested in language teacher identity, linguistic landscape, second language writing, and scholarly publishing. He recently completed a long-term study of foreign English teacher identity in Korea and is planning to contribute this work in the near future.
Michael Griffin is a teacher, interpreter-coach, teacher-trainer, teacher-educator, editor, frequent presenter, and blogger. He has been involved in ELT since 1999 and his current interests include ELF, reflective practice, 21st century skills, and buzzwords.
