The Suwon-Gyeonggi KOTESOL chapter’s June workshop features two speakers, YoungKi Kim presenting “Experiences with Education in Indiana and Changes in English Education” and Leonie Overbeek presenting “Hero’s Quest: an Engaging Game Which Promotes Learner Autonomy.”
As always, attendance is free and refreshments will be provided.

Topic 1: “Experiences with Education in Indiana and Changes in English Education”
Part 1: Experiences with education in Indiana, USA
The presenter will share his two years of experiences in Indiana, USA. He will talk about how the Indiana education system is different from the Korean system and what we can learn from the differences and similarities between the two education systems.
Part 2: A few suggestions about current changes in English education to ponder together
The second part of the presentation will be about the current changes taking place in the field of English education. The presenter will cover how we have to deal with these changes and how we may teach students effectively in the middle of these changes. This part will contain time to discuss suggestions and ideas together with the workshop participants.
Topic 2: “Hero’s Quest: an Engaging Game Which Promotes Learner Autonomy”
Most educators agree that students need to be autonomous, take control of their learning, and feel they are in charge in order for effective learning.
However, most students are not that interested in working alone, or even in working with the material provided at all. This is where good game design can help – when students become engaged by the game and don’t realize that they are actually doing the same stuff they find ‘boring’ when presented as a task or communicative activity.
To illustrate, the presenter will present the game she recently designed, Hero’s Quest, and discuss how students responded during a winter camp.
Participants in this workshop will have a chance to play the game and examine the basic premise, that of presenting worksheets and tasks as challenges which count towards moving forward in the game.
Speaker Bios:
YoungKi Kim has been an English teacher for 16 years and a member of KOTESOL for more than 10 years. He recently returned from Indiana, USA where he spent two years completing his master’s degree. He is currently working as a supervisor at Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education.
Leonie Overbeek holds qualifications in Analytical Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from the University of Johannesburg, an M.Phil in Value and Policy Studies (organizational communication) from Stellenbosch University, and a TESOL certificate from Boston Language College, where she also taught the TESOL certificate for two years. She has been teaching at the middle school level in South Korea for seven years and feels that she has learned as much from her students as they have learned from her. She now teaches elementary school children and loves every minute of it. She believes you are never too old to learn, never too young to be denied an opportunity, and never above learning something new!
