This month the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Chapter meeting will be divided into two parts, a workshop on English education in Korea presented by David Shaffer, Ph.D., followed by a swap shop for members to exchange their favorite lessons.
Part 1: Workshop
"English Education in Korea: Looking Back, Looking Forward" by Dr. David Shaffer
In this rapidly changing world, the pace of change in Korea is even faster. This easily holds true for Korean education as well. This presentation contrasts the Korean English education scene of today with that of four decades ago. It will compare the degree of English use and proficiencies; it will compare teachers, students, the classroom environment and class size (64-72 was once considered normal), teaching methodology, teaching and learning materials (a tape player was once a treasure for both the teacher and the student), and much more. The presentation will conclude with an open discussion on the future outlook for English education in Korea
Part 2: Swap Shop
Please bring a game, classroom activity, worksheet or other teaching idea that has worked well for you in the classroom and be prepared to share your ideas with the group (5-10 minutes per presenter). If possible, please bring some copies of your printable materials to share with the group. (There are places to print and photocopy materials at the north gate of KNU.)
