Our monthly workshop for March will be presented by Vincent Greenier, and will feature Visiting Head Professor of the Center for English Education for Gifted Youth, Jonathan Jordahl, who will moderate a discussion session with alumni from the program. Attendees will have the opportunity to directly engage with these students about their experience of creative learning at the center. This workshop promises to be very interesting, with valuable contributions by the participating students as well as two very distinguished speakers.
Title: Exploring the Relationship between Creativity and Language Learning: An Arts-based Curriculum vs. a Textbook-driven Curriculum
This workshop will first outline Vincent's doctoral research on the affects of an Arts-based EFL curriculum, as compared to a textbook-driven curriculum, on middle school students in South Korea.
It will demonstrate: 1) why and how teaching “creatively” is important to language learning; 2) the relationship between creative development and language learning and; 3) the process-oriented, arts-based creative curriculum used in Vincent’s research.
The workshop component of the afternoon will ask attendees to design an arts-based project based on the interdisciplinary, creative curriculum model proposed by Vincent. Through this exercise, attendees will have the opportunity to experience how creative collaboration can be a catalyst to creative, emergent language use and will better understand how to implement creative art projects into their own classroom practice.
After Vincent's presentation and workshop, Professor Jonathan Jordahl will lead a panel discussion with students of the CEEGY program at KNU.
“The Creative Colloquium” Panel Discussion
Most EFL teachers in Korea have probably experienced frustration over what they may have perceived as a lack of creativity among their students. Many teachers have likely wondered if creativity is valued or nurtured in Korean education, whether or not students enjoy creative activities, and/or if they see such activities as valuable for learning English. Here is an amazing opportunity to ask questions of students who have had the unusual educational experience of participating in a curriculum designed to develop their creativity and critical thinking. Jonathan Jordahl, Head Visiting Professor and Curriculum Developer of the Center for English Education for Gifted Youth (CEEGY) at Kyungpook National University, will lead a panel discussion with alumni of the CEEGY program. These young students are excited to share their experiences and opinions about creative learning with you.
Presenter bio's:
Vincent Greenier is a PhD Candidate at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He has been a teacher in South Korea for more than 10 years and is currently a Visiting Professor of English at Andong National University. His professional interests include Gifted and Talented education, constructivism in language teaching, reflective practice, and qualitative research methods. Jonathan Jordahl, M.F.A. is a Visiting Professor in the Department of English Education at Kyungpook National University, as well as Head Visiting Professor and Curriculum Developer of the Center for English Education for Gifted Youth (CEEGY) jointly sponsored by KNU and the Daegu Metropolitan Board of Education. He also has Master’s degrees in Linguistics (TEFL) and English (Expository Writing) from the University of Iowa, as well as a Master Educator’s licence in Secondary English with a K-12 Talented and Gifted endorsement from the State of Iowa. He first came to Korea to teach in the Department English Education at Kyungnam University in Masan for one year during the Democracy Movement, 1985-86. In 2006 he returned to Korea to help start the pilot program for CEEGY. With Profs.
