Evaluating the Usefulness of Introductory Writing Classes for College ESL Students
Abstract
This project will examine the effectiveness of introductory writing classes for the growing number of ESL speakers who attending universities in the United States. Universities have started to create introductory writing classes to prepare these students for rigorous academic writing. For many ESL students, writing in their own native language is much different than writing in English. This project will look at universities that both offer and do not offer these types of programs. It will determine how effective these introductory writing classes are through interviews with students and professors while looking at published research to draw more conclusions. From this research, it will draw conclusions about the effectiveness of these writing programs to determine what changes or additions should be made for the future.
Biographicals
Andrew Yim is currently working as an elementary school teacher in South Korea. He is from California and he grew up there for most of his life. He is a graduate of Purdue University and worked as a writing tutor for the Purdue University Writing Lab. He wants to pursue a master's and PHD in Rhetoric and Composition. He wants to study how rhetoric and composition classes at universities are helping prepare ESL students for English writing. He is currently learning Korean and wants to be fluent in Korean one day. In his spare time, he likes to play ultimate Frisbee, dance, and hang out with friends.
