Analyzing Effective Teaching through Video Analysis
Serving as a teacher trainer and microteaching instructor for over 7 years I have had the privilege of being able to observe thousands of teachers in action. Through these countless observations I have noticed that certain trends have emerged in regards to the characteristics and practices of both effective and ineffective language teachers. In this workshop, participants will first be introduced to some of the key components of effective language teaching in South Korea. Participants will then watch 4 teaching videos and critically analyze each lesson by roleplaying as lesson evaluators. After each video a discussion will take place in regards to each teachers’ effective and ineffective practices. Through this workshop participants’ awareness of good teaching practices will be heightened resulting in individual critical self-reflection.
Author Bio
George Whitehead is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Leicester, and a professor in the English language and literature department at the University of Suwon. He has worked in Korea, Canada and Japan as a language instructor, curriculum developer, teacher-trainer, and director of university TESOL programs. Prior to coming to the University of Suwon, he was the head instructor at Gyeonggi-do Institute of Foreign Language Education where he was responsible for running professional development courses for Korean in-service teachers of English. His research and teaching practices focus on dealing with the washback effects of high-stakes testing, and developing and implementing practical, contextually-sensitive, high-leverage approaches and techniques for English education in Korea.
