Come and join the Seoul KOTESOL Chapter for our Fall dose of teacher professional development, for some pedagogical inspiration and to share how your fall classes are going!
We will have a presentation on being a successful YouTuber by Martin Sketchley, followed by a reflective practice session facilitated by Christopher Miller. In these sessions, we invite attendees to share ideas and challenges in guided, small-group discussions. Teachers of all ages and students of all levels are invited and encouraged to attend. KOTESOL membership is not required to attend, and the event is free.
Examining Critical Incidents in the Classroom
In this inaugural reflective practice session for the KOTESOL Seoul chapter, the facilitator will take an open-ended approach. After sharing initial background information (such as details about current teaching context), participants will be invited to share any “critical incidents (Farrell, 2015)” from this semester so far. The experiences may be of a subjectively positive or negative nature, but should be something that is vividly remembered. Through a series of guided questions, participants will be asked about the experience(s) in more detail, with an emphasis on trying to connect these experiences to the teacher’s larger personal values and “theories of teaching.” If time permits, participants will discuss a variety of options for future reflective practice sessions, including comfort level with using recordings of teacher performance for analysis, reflection, and, if deemed relevant, considerations for modifying practice.
Christopher Miller has been intrigued by and engaged in reflecting on classroom practice since 2014. Christopher has published multiple articles on the topic in a variety of magazines and journals. My Experiences of YouTube as an English Teacher
In this talk, I will share my journey as a so-called ‘YouTuber’ and its implications in education. I will focus on personal reflections and experiences of recording my own lessons, the technology required to document your teaching, as well as opportunities for budding teachers wishing to video their lessons.
Martin Sketchley has been involved in English language teaching for almost 18 years, with a keen interest in technology, videography, as well as online education. He currently teaches as an Assistant Professor at Woosong University and SolBridge College, and has taught many different courses ranging from academic writing to intercultural communication.
He holds an MA in English Language Teaching, a TEFL-Q, a CELTA, as well as a Trinity Young Learner Extension Certificate. In his free-time, he runs a YouTube Channel, dedicated to English teaching, that now boasts over 18,000 subscribers and also posts on his website, ELT Experiences.
