Abstract
Have you ever noticed that students cannot distinguish between words like 'rice' and
'lice'? Or 'it' and 'eat'? The reason? Phonological deafness!
You may wonder, “How do I teach students to distinguish these words? Is it even possible?” To answer those questions in reverse order, “Yes” and “With phonetic training”.
For the first part of the presentation, Tom will explain what phonological deafness is, its possible causes and ways to teach students to distinguish between difficult sounds. Afterwards, Christina will lead a class activity workshop in which you will learn about a phonetic training and pronunciation activity that you can use in your classroom. The activity will be demonstrated, and you will be led step-by-step through the simple process of creating your own activity materials.
