Workshop Abstract:
Conflict resolution skills enhance any English language curriculum. Everyone can relate to conflicts experienced internally or in relationships, and the topic is particularly appropriate for language students as they prepare to handle potential misunderstandings that arise as a part of cross-cultural communication. Even more relevant to English classes is that conflict resolution skills are communication skills. In order to resolve conflicts, participants need to explain their perspectives and needs. Equally essential to the process is active listening, seeking to understand the other from their own perspective. By speaking and listening in the process of collaborative problem-solving, language learners develop practical language skills. In this hands-on workshop, participants will practice techniques for helping learners improve their English speaking and listening through learning and practicing conflict-resolution skills. Participants will first be introduced to the concept of conflict resolution and the types of skills required as they apply to language learning. Then, facilitators will lead participants through a conflict analysis exercise and mediation role-play that can be replicated in ELT contexts. Finally, participants will reflect on the activity and suggest what adaptations or ideas they might add to use to the exercises in their teaching.
