Title: Rainbow Speeches - Presentation Prep for Young Learners
Abstract: Presentation Days have been a staple of the ESL Community for decades. Parents love to see English in use, and students learn new skills, build confidence, and find motivation for their language-learning journey. But memorization can be a stressful experience, both for the students and the teachers. This interactive workshop draws ideas from scientific research as well as tried and tested classroom techniques, to discuss practical approaches to presentation prep that you can implement in your classrooms. Make learning and creating speeches not only an effective method-based process, but a fun and dynamic adventure that will leave your students begging for more!
BIO: Jason Dunn has been an educator across a range of subjects and platforms for well over a decade. From teaching marine conservation in Thailand to running surf and snow schools in Australia, his current passion is pulling diverse themes and ideas from his experiences into the ESL Classroom. For the last 3 years, he and his wife Kyung have been running THiNK English Academy in Busan.
Title: Soft Skill Development in the EFL Classroom
Abstract: For the last decade or so, the term "21st century skill" has become a buzzword in the field of education, particularly in the English as a Foreign Language cohort. 21st century skills refer to so-called "soft skills" that develop alongside the content knowledge and study skills which were the traditional focus of the elementary and secondary classroom. These skills include the "6 C's" which are critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, confidence, and content along with the modern additions such as critical media literacy and global citizenship. In this workshop, attendees will engage with a brief overview of some of the 21st century skills and why it is important to consider how to develop them in the EFL classroom. Tips, tools, and resources for integrating soft skill development into a wide variety of classroom will be covered before attendees engage in discussion on best practices related to soft skill integration and development.
BIO: Elizabeth Norman is a teacher trainer and researcher at the Gyeonggi-do Institute for Global Education. She has developed curriculum for and run workshops in programs related to a wide variety of professional development areas for both local Korean teachers (Secondary and Elementary) and foreign English language teachers. Her areas of expertise range from Global Citizenship Education to the Structured Literacy approach to phonics.
