Presentation 1

It’s Not A Conversation Class Unless You Have A Conversation Test
by Gunther Breaux
Associate Professor, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies

Abstract
How can you teach conversation if you can't test it? A conversation class must have a conversation test. This is education, and human nature. What gets tested gets done. This presentation will describe a classroom conversation test that is easy to give and grade. It measures speaking ability and improvement. Each student gets extensive personal feedback, and teachers get accurate grading and improvement data. This test measures how much students do, not how much they do wrong. And students do all the work. The educational goal should be conversational ability. Here is how to get it.

Biography
Gunther Breaux has taught English conversation to Korean university freshmen for 20 years. He’s an associate professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and the author of several EFL textbooks, including Jazz English. His research interest is Conversation-Based Learning and he has presented at international conferences in China, Japan, Korea and the United States.
