Securing Assessment Fairness: An Evidence-Based Assignment Approach in the AI Era

With the advances in generative AI, ELT instructors in universities are facing a crisis of trust: How can we be sure that student assignments truly reflect their own effort and learning? This session moves beyond the stress of policing AI and offers a practical, systemic approach to ensuring academic integrity. Instead of focusing solely on the final product, we will explore how to use "process data" – such as time spent on an assignment, revision patterns, and typing behaviors – as objective evidence of student engagement and effort. This session will demonstrate how to design assignments that encourage transparency and simplify the grading process. By shifting the focus to "Integrity by Design," instructors can reduce their administrative burden and avoid uncomfortable confrontations with students about AI over-reliance. This approach ensures that grades are awarded fairly based on genuine learning effort, providing a roadmap for managing assignments in any ELT course.
