It’s the Daegu-Gyeongbuk KOTESOL chapter’s final workshop for the year. This month we have two presenters to be followed by our Christmas social event – mark Saturday December 6th in your advent calendar!

Finding Your Teaching Style – Chelsea Irish

This presentation will be about exploring how to find your teaching style. We will do various exercises together that focus on what teaching means to you as an individual, and how you can blend your way of thinking with an idea of classroom structure. We will look into the qualities of what makes a good teacher, how your personality affects the way you teach, and how to marry all of these ideas into your individual teaching style.

Chelsea is currently an elementary school teacher in Gyeongju. She teaches all grades from first to sixth. Her first school was an all-boys middle school in the same city, which was the first teaching experience in her life. This year is nearing the end of her second year teaching English in South Korea. This experience has been a kind of crash course in public education. Before this, she was attending the University of Central Florida majoring in Anthropology. Even though she lacks experience, she firmly believes that students should be responsible for their learning. Her teaching philosophy revolves around student-centered strategies and activities.

Creativity-focused Lessons – Logan West

The goal of this presentation is to be able to construct lesson plans that maximize student creativity while pursuing the objective(s) of the lesson plan. Various methods to accomplish this will be explored through a variety of low-resource activities that exercise a student's adaptability and creativity. The activity portion of this lesson will assist teachers in coming up with their own methods.

Logan currently works as an English high school teacher for the EPIK initiative in Daegu. He teaches first and second-year students. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in international studies from the Ohio State University in 2012. Currently he is pursuing a Master's degree in TESOL from Webster University. He has taught English as an intern in Tanzania for the NGO Cross Cultural Solutions and as a volunteer teaching assistant for a community refugee center in Ohio. His tour with EPIK is his first experience teaching full-time. His teaching philosophy focuses on teaching to the needs of the student.

KOTESOL workshops for professional development are FREE to all. Members and non-members alike are welcome so feel free to invite your friends and colleagues. Snacks and drinks are also provided. Additionally, this month features the end of year KOTESOL social event so we hope to see you there!
