The 11th Annual Seoul KOTESOL Conference, "Think Global, Teach Local" will be held Saturday 29 March 2014.
Keynote Speaker: Sandra McKay, University of Hawaii at Manoa
Globalization, culture and the EIL pedagogy
In this talk I would consider various definitions of globalization and examinewhat these suggest for current language use and language teaching. Given this framework of globalization I would then consider the following questions: What should be the cultural basis of English teaching? What grammatical, pragmatic, and discourse norms should apply? What should be the cultural basis of classroom materials and methodology? In closing, I would argue that the goal of culture learning in English as an international language pedagogy should be to promote a sphere of interculturality (Kramsch, 1998) in which students examine their own culture in the process of learning about other cultures.
