About Our Guest
After working in the hard sciences for more than thirty years, Leonie Overbeek turned to her love of her second language, English, and spent twelve years teaching at various levels in the Korean public schools. She decided to retire to Bulgaria rather than her native South Africa in order to pursue a doctorate in environmental philosophy. She has completed the coursework part of the three-year degree successfully and is currently designing her research program. She lives on a smallholding in a village called Zaychino Orese where she has been slowly renovating both house and garden. She hopes to establish a place where people can visit a relatively unspoiled and natural environment to attend workshops dealing with permaculture, apiculture, and natural remedies, as well as capturing the landscape through art workshops.
Leonie is also an artist skilled in a variety of media. She once was part of an amateur theatrical troupe and has also directed a play or two. Studying voice under Helen van Eede, she took part in several musical productions and one opera, as part of the chorus. A lead role in a production of Pirates of Penzance, playing the role of Ruth, was the highlight of her time in musical theater. She also won the second prize in a sci-fi competition for a short story about wanting to live forever, and she loves painting in acrylics and watercolors. In 2017, Leonie held a solo exhibition of her works at a restaurant in Seoul. She is a keen baker and is currently making her own wine from grapes grown on her vines.
