Our Advisory Board
The Teacher of the Year committee has recruited an 8-member advisory board that includes some of the most well respected ELT educators in our industry. The board features a diverse range of nationalities and specialties, from teacher education to young learners. The members have volunteered their time and expertise to provide guidance on the selection process, as well as opinions on the finalists for the award.

Barbara Hoskins Sakamoto, International Teacher Development Institute (Japan)
Barbara Hoskins Sakamoto will be a familiar name to many, having worked with us at KOTESOL on many occasions. Without a doubt, she’s one of our most popular presenters, and she has even been able to make people dance at her workshops! Her motto is "Always try new things." When she's not teaching, writing, or giving workshops, she's exploring the potential of new technologies for collaboration and professional development. You can often find her online working with teachers around the world as Program Director for International Teacher Development Institute (iTDi.pro) or on her award-winning blog, Teaching Village. Barbara is co-author of Let's Go, one of the world's best-selling English courses for children, published by Oxford University Press.

Gabriel Díaz Maggioli, Catholic University of Uruguay (Uruguay)
An experienced teacher, teacher-educator, and administrator, as well as a productive scholar, Gabriel Díaz Maggioli research focuses on teacher education, pedagogy, and professional development. He has been a Hubert Humphrey Fellow at Pennsylvania State University's College of Education, a visiting scholar at the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, DC, and a consultant to many educational institutions in Latin America and the United States. He is a frequent presenter at professional development events throughout the world. His work on teacher portfolios is the backbone of the Teacher of the Year portfolio evaluation rubric.

Eun-sung Park, Sogang University (South Korea)
Eun Sung Park is a professor in the English Department at Sogang University. Her research interests include second language input processing, written corrective feedback, and the interface of theory and practice in language learning and teaching. Her recent work includes articles in Applied Linguistics, Language Awareness, Language Learning, Language Teaching Research, and a co-edited book (with Bernard Spolsky) ‘English Education at theTertiary Level in Asia: From Policy to Practice’ (Routledge, 2017).

Willy Renandya, National Institute of Education (Singapore)
Willy Renandya is a ubiquitous figure on the Asian ELT scene, a language teacher educator with extensive teaching experience, and author and editor of numerous important books and articles. He currently teaches applied linguistics courses at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Dr. Renandya’s most recent books include Simple, Powerful Strategies for Student Centered Learning with George Jacobs and Michael Power (2016, Springer) and English Language Teaching Today: Linking Theory and Practice with Handoyo P. Widodo (2016, Springer).

Tom Robb, Kyoto Sangyo University (Japan)
Thomas Robb, Ph.D., University of Hawaii, is Professor Emeritus, Kyoto Sangyo University, where he was Chair of the Department of English, Faculty of Foreign Languages until he retired in March of 2017. He is a long-time user of CALL and the Internet, and has created a number of websites and applications for Extensive Reading, student projects, interactive learning and professional exchange. One site for extensive reading, mreader.org now has over 100,000 student users in 40+ countries.
He has been President of JALT (The Japan Association for Language Teaching), has been on the Board of Directors of International TESOL, and a past president Pacific CALL. He is Chair of Extensive Reading Foundation, the editor of TESL-EJ, the first online journal for ELT, and the founder of the annual GLoCALL conference. Recently he has been delivering workshops to teachers and ministry officials concerning Extensive Reading around East Asia -- in Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Shannon Tanghe, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota (U.S.A.)
Shannon Tanghe spent a good part of her career teaching in South Korea (over 15 years), before moving on to her present position of Program Director and Associate Professor in the Master of Arts in ESL program at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Her current courses focus on international perspectives of English language teaching and reflective language teaching. Her ongoing research focuses on collaborative co-teaching, World Englishes, and internationalizing teacher education. She was the 2016 TESOL Teacher of the Year, an award she won while she was working in Korea.

Kyungsook Yeum, Sookmyung University (South Korea)
Dr. Kyungsook Yeum is the Director of SMU TESOL and the faculty of Sookmyung Women’s University. She has been a fixture in Korean ELT for many years, and served on the TESOL Board of Directors, TESOL International Association from 2015-2018. Dr Yeum’s deep understanding of the TESOL profession have been honed through her work as Chair of Program Administration Interest Session at TESOL International Association, as National President of Korea TESOL, as Vice President of the Applied Linguistics Association of Korea (ALAK). Dr Yeum has served as the Director and Administrative Professor responsible for the TESOL certificate programs at Sookmyung for 20 years.
