Jeonnam Foreign Language High School in Naju is seeking an experienced and passionate English language teacher to begin in late February 2024 (one year contract, renewable). This position follows the EPIK contract but offers more independence and responsibility than other EPIK positions. It would suit a teacher looking for a challenging but rewarding public school position who is keen to take charge of their own teaching and professional development.

 

Features of this position:

  • Work with motivated, ambitious students who have chosen to attend a high school specializing in foreign languages.
  • Teach independently in your own classroom. Take responsibility for classroom management, planning lessons, carrying out assessment, etc.
  • Collaborate with another foreign English teacher to develop a speaking and writing syllabus, including assessment plans.
  • A busy schedule (~20 lessons per week, maximum 22) with very good class sizes (~10 students per class). Regular working hours from 8:30 to 16:30, with some optional after school opportunities.
  • Extra responsibilities include organizing and judging end-of-year speech competitions and similar.
  • Great apartment close to the school and not far from Yeongsanpo Bus Terminal and Naju Station. Easy access to KTX trains and to Gwangju.
  • An EPIK contract with all the standard EPIK benefits for Jeollanamdo.

 

Requirements:

  • Meet the criteria for an E-2 visa.
  • Currently in Korea/prepared to begin work the last week of February.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, with one or more of the following qualifications:
    • Certified teacher
    • Education, teaching, or TESOL major
    • English language teaching certification such as TESOL/TEFL/CELTA, with more than 100 hours of study.

 

Desirable candidate attributes:

  • Ideal teaching qualifications – TESOL degree or equivalent.
  • Experience teaching in Korean public schools, particularly at the secondary level.
  • Experience with developing and implementing English speaking and writing programs/syllabuses and with conducting assessment.
  • Organized and detail-oriented. Capable of taking responsibility for lesson planning, assessment, and other teaching responsibilities quite independently.
  • Korean language ability is beneficial, but not essential.
